His studio discipline is based in critical and site-specific research, painting and sculpture. Sheffield’s professional background consists of a diversity of institutions and collaborations across borders. He served in the United States Army for eight years as a Visual Communications and Military Intelligence Public Affairs specialist in Paraguay, Guatemala, Brazil, and Kuwait. He deployed to Baghdad, Iraq (2007-2008), working alongside Iraqi civilians and community leaders during the Iraqi Reconstruction Campaign. He received a BFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts, and an MFA in Painting/Printmaking from Yale University. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the United States Armed Forces Meritorious Service Medal, the Alice Kimball English Traveling Fellowship, the JUNCTURE Human Rights Research and Travel Fellowship, and the US Fulbright to Uzbekistan (2019). He is a (2022-2023) National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Veteran Fellow. The featured artworks, projects, programs, and exhibitions create opportunities for people to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of war. The project began in September 2022 with a virtual scholarly seminar series at the nexus of critical ethnic studies, Native/Indigenous studies, and Middle Eastern Studies on the histories and futures of Native rebellion in relation to US militarism and warfare. The project culminated in the second Veteran Art Triennial &amp; Summit, in spring 2023, at the Chicago Cultural Center, Hyde Park Art Center, and Newberry Library. A magnificent error caused me to see an egg in the cage instead of the bird. I then grasped a new and astonishing poetic secret, because the shock I experienced had been provoked precisely by the affinity of the two objects, the cage and the egg, whereas I used to provoke this shock by causing the encounter of unrelated objects.1 –René MagritteThe title of the exhibition, Elective Affinities, originates from an 18th century scientific term describing the merging of disparate chemical compounds. The phrase took on greater metaphoric meaning in Johann Wolfgang von Goethes’ 1809 novel of the same name, in which Goethe applied the theory to unlikely romantic partners. In 1932, it appeared again in the title of a painting by René Magritte that prominently features a large egg inside of a birdcage. The use of this design on the table references the repeating patterns seen throughout Samarkand, including on murals alongside the exterior walls of Soviet era flats. On the table, it represents a symbol of historical restoration and tradition.&nbsp; 2. Adinkra symbols represent concepts or&nbsp; aphorisms. Cultural symbols of the Asante people from Gyaman, a former kingdom in today’s Côte D’Ivoire. The reference for including this symbol into the design resulted from various misconceptions of my identity as an African American, or Black American, while living in Samarkand. However, an additional reference envokes a disconnected lineage to Africa as a result of American Slavery.&nbsp; 2.b.&nbsp;Abusua Pa - meaning good family.
